Chapter 6

"VOLUNTARY (The Nazarite Vow). [1 - 21]"
"The Priests' Law. Blessing. [22 - 27]"

Numbers 6:1 "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,"

The Lord is now going to talk to Moses about those non-required laws, those dealing with a commitment that a person may make, as led by the Holy Spirit, to receive a more deep relationship with YHVH our Heavenly Father. The first law that is considered in this chapter is the "law or vow of the Nazarite". This chapter, as well as Numbers chapter 5 deals with spiritual organization. The Nazarite was a person that separated himself completely, while he was in the service of God. The focus to the Nazarite was demonstrating exactly how a priest of God should act continually. The Nazarite would stay away from all sensual, and earth habits, yet they lived their lives completely as the Laws of God dictated from the Scripture.

Man is to live by the Law, but at the same time we find that man simply can't be part of the world and its entanglements without violating parts of the law from time to time. Why? Its not the law that is bad, no the law is good for it directs us in every portion of our lives. But it is man that is bad and falls short of the law. So the Nazarite was trying to make his statement in this world age of flesh man; through his actions and practicing belief that the law indeed is good, and the person that tried to keep the law would truly be blessed by God in his life.

There are many men in the Bible that were under the vow of a Nazarite, such as Samuel's mother Hanna told the Lord, that if He gave her a son, "I will dedicate him to the service of the Lord. Also Samson in [Judges 13:5, 7]; and John the Baptist in [Luke 1]; and even Paul [Acts 18:18] took the oath or vow of the Nazarite on his return to Jerusalem. The angel of the Lord said that John the Baptist would be born under the vow of the Nazarite.

Numbers 6:2 "Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, `When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the Lord:"

The Word "Nazarite" in the Hebrew text is "Nazir" and it means to separate, in the service of the Lord. Each of these men and women under the vow, separated themselves from their earthly ties, to give themselves wholly into the service of God.

There is a dedication of one's self to this commitment, yet in parts of the vow, it does not have to be a complete separation for all time.

Numbers 6:3 "He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried."

This word "Separate" as used here is "Nazar", almost the same word as for Nazarite [Nazir]. It means "to abstain". The Nazarite shall abstain himself [herself] from wine [yayin] and strong drink [shekar], or any form of the grape in its dried and fermenting process. Nothing from the vine was to be eaten by the Nazarite.

When the Angel of the Lord appeared to Samson's mother in Judges 13:13 - 14; "And the angel of the Lord said unto Manoah, "Of all that I said unto the woman, let her beware." [13] "She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe."  [14]

Numbers 6:4 "All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk."

To those that take the vow of a Nazarite, not even the smallest part of those things God prohibits that are of the vine or unclean are not to be taken while under the vow.

Numbers 6:5 "All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no rasor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the Lord, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow."

The hair of a Nazarite was a diadem to YHVH our Heavenly Father. Just as the high priest has his diadem, so the diadem of the Nazarite was his hair and his turban. The groweth of the hair, symbolizes vitality and strength. Of course this reflects the intention of the person that takes this oath or vow of the Nazarite. It is taught by many that Samson's true strength was in his hair, however, as we read after his hair was cut off and Samson needed his strength back, the Lord provided it. All the time his true strength was by his faith in the Lord and not the hair. When Samson wanted one more time for that strength to return, God granted Samson that request, and Samson pulled down the pillars, and killed the Philistines. .

Numbers 6:6 "All the days that he separateth himself unto the LORD he shall come at no dead body."

This pertains also to the high priest, as recorded in Leviticus 21:11, as well as those under the vow of a Nazarite. Priests other than the high priest could go to relatives that passed away, such as his mother or father. Sure this was defiling to them, but under no circumstances could the high priest approach a dead person. So the Nazarite has the same requirements as the high priest was under.

Numbers 6:7 "He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God is upon his head."

Because the separation of God was on the head of the Nazarite, even if his father or mother passed away, he or she could not approach any dead person. YHVH is a God of the living, not a God of the dead.

We know though in the Millennium age, the Zadok will be able to approach their father and mother, sister and brother, even though it will defile them. However, they then must go through a seven day purification period before that person can again enter into the tabernacle to be before the Lord.

Ezekiel 44:25 "And they shall come at no dead person to defile themselves: but for father, or for mother, or for son, or for daughter, for brother, or for sister that hath no husband, they may defile themselves."

The meaning of dead, means that their souls are mortal, liable to die, even though they are in their incorruptible bodies for the Millennium age. Once a Zadok has approach his spiritually dead family member, to cause they to shape up. there is a requirement following his visit.

Ezekiel 44:26 "And after he is cleansed, they shall reckon unto him seven days;" [26] "And in the day that he goeth into the sanctuary, unto the inner court, to minister in the sanctuary, he shall offer his sin offering, saith the Lord." [27]

Numbers 6:8 "All the days of his separation he is holy unto the Lord."

Numbers 6:9 "And if any man die very suddenly by him, and he hath defiled the head of his consecration; then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it."

So if a person that is near this Nazarite or high priest dies, who is under the vow of consecration, even being in the area of the dead person; he shall be unclean for seven day. After the seven days, the Nazarite was to shave his head.

Stop and think for a moment, there is a time coming very shortly when Satan and his fallen angels will be coming to earth, as recorded in Revelation 12:7-9. When Satan is cast onto the earth he knows that he has but a short time to win Christians over to him. Satan already has the heathen in his camp, yet many Christians will see his supernatural powers, hear the flood of lies pouring from his lying lips, and go chasing after him instantly. Why? Because they have been taught to do so by their traditions of men. The whole world in fact will become part of that one world religious system, and be proud of it, as they sit as a queen of Satan, part of Satan's bride, and reaping all the benefits that Satan will give them. God will give Satan the authority to de everything that he does in deceiving mankind, and Satan will take that authority and use it on you. When you are committed and expect to receive the favors and good things of this earth age, you will give much to keep on getting what you have tasted of.

The point I am bringing up here, is that when a person commits to a vow of a Nazarite, and follows that oath, the things of this earth age, or wealth, power and fame are not important to him. The only thing that matters is observing all of God's laws, and being fully committed to our Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Numbers 6:10 "And on the eighth day he shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons, to the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:"

Also on that eighth day, the Nazarite shall bring two turtle doves, or two young Pigeons to the priest at the tabernacle. These two birds will be offered up as a burnt offering [the Olath] and a sin offering [The Chattach offering].

Numbers 6:11 "And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, and make an atonement for him, for that he sinned by the dead, and shall hallow his head that same day."

The term, "shall hallow his head", means to be consecrated again. This then became a means for that Nazarite or high priest to reconsecrate himself to YHVH our heavenly Father, and to his vow that he made before. Following this atonement, his hair would start growing again.

Numbers 6:12 "And he shall consecrate unto the Lord the days of his separation, and shall bring a lamb of the first year for a trespass offering: but the days that were before shall be lost, because his separation was defiled."

In other words, once the person under the oath of the Nazarite has defiled himself by coming near a dead person or breaking the oath of his vows, those days prior are as they never existed before the Lord. So after the trespass offering of the ram has been made, the "Asam offering" , for the sin of omission, then that person will start his vows of the Nazarite all over. Most of the time, this vow is given for a specified time period, or until an event has passed, then that person will have to start that time frame all over. Many times though it was for life, so the person would have to rededicate himself to his vow of separation.

The commitment that each of us must make to Christ, when that time of Satan in his role as the Antichrist comes, is just as deep as this vow of the Nazarite, for everything that he has done for our Lord prior to the breaking of the oath, or law, is just as he has never done one thing for the Lord. When you set your hand to the plow there is no looking back; and when you set your mind to the oath of following the Lord and you are living in that final generation, as we are, when Satan comes and you bow to him, God will turn you over to him. Like Jesus said in Matthew 24:19; "Woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!"

If you play around with Satan and his kids, you will become impregnated by your actions. No this does not pertain to the relationship between a mother and her child, but between a member of the bride of Christ that goes fooling around with Satan, thinking he is the true Christ. If you defile yourself in our generation, it will be just as the Nazarite that defiled himself by breaking one of those parts of his vow or oath. There is a difference though, the Nazarite could start over, only God will not allow you to take back your joining to Satan as one of his brides.

Numbers 6:13 "And this is the law of the Nazarite, when the days of his separation are fulfilled: he shall be brought unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:"

So now in the next eight verses we will see how the Nazarite will be released from his vows of consecration and separation. We will also see the instructions for the sacrificial festival.

Numbers 6:14 "And he shall offer his offering unto the Lord, one he lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt offering, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin offering, and one ram without blemish for peace offering."

There is a difference between the Nazarite and the obligations of the High priest. The High priest is locked into his position, and is there for life. The Nazarite is not; he has selected a portion of his life to be dedicated to God's Word, a time when he would be separated from the things of this world, and after that time is finished, he returns to his earthly obligations. Remember that these offerings were a type for Christ, and Christ was our sacrifice for all times, without blemish.

The sin offering [Chattath] were for sins that were involuntary, sins of commission, by missing the mark of perfection under the law. The Burnt offering [olah] were for sins and had to be completely burnt. The smoke would ascend up to heaven, conveying its meaning as being wholly burnt. And the Peace offering [the Shelem], hence it was for perfection and for payment of vows and praises to God while he was under the oath of the consecration.

Numbers 6:15 "And the basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, and wafers of unleavened bread anointed with oil, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings."

This olive oil is always symbolic of the Holy Spirit. The fine flour mingled with the oil is of Christ; and it is offered up to the Father. Notice here that only fine flour could be used in this offering, and never barley, for this is a type for Christ.

Numbers 6:16 "And the priest shall bring them before the Lord, and shall offer his sin offering, and his burnt offering:"

The Nazarite making the oath will bring this all to the priest to be offered before the Lord for his sin offering and his burnt offering. So this would cover the involuntary sins that the Nazarite may have committed while under the vow of his consecration.

Numbers 6:17 "And he shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the Lord, with the basket of unleavened bread: the priest shall offer also his meat offering, and his drink offering."

Each of these items is a type for Christ, the offered Sacrifice for one and all times. The details of these Offerings are given in the first five Chapters of Leviticus.

Numbers 6:18 "And the Nazarite shall shave the head of his separation at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall take the hair of the head of his separation, and put it in the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace offerings."

The hair of the Nazarite was his diadem marking him as one that was separated, and honoring God in his life. So once this Nazarite decides to leave this duty or vow, he goes to the door of the tabernacle and his head is shaven, and the hair burned under the fire of the burnt offerings on the altar. The hair then also become a sacrifice to the Lord.

Numbers 6:19 "And the priest shall take the sodden shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them upon the hands of the Nazarite, after the hair of his separation is shaven:"

The priest, who is a representative of the Lord, takes this boiled shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake and wafer out of the basket, which was normally assigned to the Nazarite; so the priest is taking this Nazarites portion of the meal, along with his hair, and burning them on the altar, in the burnt offering. This indicates table fellowship with the Lord, in his successful service to Him, and is a wave offering to God. It was voluntary and not required by God. So this is a celebration following the time specified by the Nazarite.

Numbers 6:20 "And the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the Lord: this is holy of the priest, with the wave breast and heave shoulder: and after that the Nazarite may drink wine."

At the close of this sacrificial meal, the Nazarite could drink the wine, for his service time is completed. The wave breast and the heave shoulder, as with all peace offerings, went to the priests for his service, as recorded in Leviticus 7:32 - 34.

Numbers 6:21 "This is the law of the Nazarite who hath vowed, and of his offering unto the Lord for his separation, beside that that his hand shall get: according to the vow which he vowed, so he must do after the law of his separation.' " "

As recorded in other verses, the Nazarite was forced to bring certain offering for this voluntary vow, but this verse is saying that this man or woman under the vow could also bring other offerings if he or she desired to. Most Nazarites did not keep their riches from this world, for they dedicated them for the service that they participated in.

Numbers 6:22 "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,"

Numbers 6:23 " "Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, `On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,"

Numbers 6:24 " `The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:"

"The Lord" Jehovah the Father, is the source of all blessing, and these children of Israel were moving through the wilderness, and will move into a new land filled with heathen nations. God's people know that we are living in a world age that God created and has control over, and He can protect each of us. Hebrews 10:3 "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word [Jesus Christ, John 1:1-3] of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

These are the priestly blessings of and to the people. God called His people to be a covenant people, separated to Himself. He called them to be holy just as He is Holy. The next few verses are a promise from God, that if His people will truly do things His way, He will bless them.

Numbers 6:25 "The Lord make His face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:"

"The Lord" is Jehovah the Son, the channel of all blessing to His people. Ephesians 1:3 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:" Paul is addressing "the faithful in Christ Jesus." This blessing is given even to day at the close in most of our churches, and verse 2; "Grace be to you and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ."

Numbers 6:26 "The Lord lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.' ' "

The "countenance" of God is the same as His face [the Holy Spirit], and it is the token of Divine favor and delight that God gives to His people. When Jesus was going to the Father, He promised the a Comforter would come to be with them, to heal them and give them peace. The Holy Spirit is the one that gives peace of mind to you and I living in this earth age of flesh man. He is the one that opens our minds to the truth, and allows us to have knowledge and understanding of His Word. This is why each of us must study His Word on a daily basis, and open our minds to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Numbers 6:27 "And they shall put My name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them." "

God is promising you and I, as well as these children of Israel that were out there in the wilderness, that when we put our Lord and Savior first, He will bless us. However He is making it conditional, If you will do these things, I will bless you. This is YHVH's promise to you and I personally.
